PENNSBURG PA – Espionage. Combat. Farm work. All were among professions of – surprise! – women during the nation’s Revolutionary War.
It’s likely several area residents think assignments like spying or fighting were the exclusive work of men in the Continental Army, led by Gen. George Washington. Dr. Susanne Johnston knows differently.
Johnston is a teacher and popular speaker on historical topics. She also serves as southeastern district director for the Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
Johnston is the featured guest during the Sept. 9 (2026; Wednesday) “Brown Bag Lunch,” at noon in the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary St. The event is free to attend, virtually or in person, and is open to the public.
Stories of ‘Remarkable Women’
Her talk will “recount stories of some remarkable women who came to the aid of the Patriots in the Revolutionary War,” the Heritage Center reports. She “loves to share her knowledge” of genealogy and the war’s history, it adds.
The event is one of many within the Schwenkfelder’s semiquincentennial program, observing the nation’s 250th anniversary. It is made possible in part by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is the largest museum in the region. It shares stories of the Pennsylvania German experience. The center is open free of charge Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.
