BIRDSBORO PA – A new educational workshop, “Early American Candle Making,” will be introduced during September as a new annual activity at the Daniel Boone Homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Rd.
Participants can “journey back in time” with instructors Greg and Peggy Allen-Geesaman, a homestead media release explains, to learn “the art of crafting candles with natural beeswax.”
Those enrolled will take part “in the careful and significant process of candle dipping,” a traditional Early American method. They will use it to create their own double-wick 100% beeswax hand-dipped candle.
A historic presentation by Colonial period interpreters during class will reveal interesting facts about Early American Living and the history of candle-making in the 18th Century.
Those in the workshop also will have an opportunity to make a cinnamon-scented display ornament. They will use varied designs of stoneware cookie molds in a method similar to that of German Lebkuchen Bakers in the 16th century .
The workshop is scheduled for Sept. 20 (2026; Sunday) from 1-3 p.m. Advance registration is required by Sept. 13. Obtain a registration form by sending an e-mail to thedanielboonehomestead@gmail.com.
This is a beginner-level workshop, open to all ages. Youngsters must accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to no more than 10 seats.
Tickets cost $45 for Daniel Boone Homestead associate members, and $50 for non-members. All supplies are included. All proceeds support the homestead. The program is funded and provided by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.
About The Instructors
The Geesamans are co-owners of Heritage Art and Craft Studio in Reading PA.
For more than 50 years, Greg has dedicated himself to the study of American History, gardening, landscaping, agriculture, and environmental preservation. He shares his knowledge with others through educational seminars, classes, and workshops.
Peggy, a native of Berks County, has dedicated more than 30 years to teaching art and crafts. Before launching her own business in the 1990s, she worked in retail marketing.
Although she offers a wide range of classes, her passion lies in Traditional American crafts. She stays informed of current historical trends as a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration.
About the Boone Homestead
The Daniel Boone Homestead is the birthplace of the famed frontiersman, born in 1734. The Boone House, constructed in three stages throughout the 18th Century, is a 10-room stone structure fully furnished to the period.
The homestead is located between Reading and Pottstown, one mile north of U.S. Route 422 near Baumstown. It is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Its daily historic operations are run by the Homestead Associates, a local non-profit organization.
