POTTSTOWN PA – Spring re-fueling and maintenance on Unit 1 of two nuclear reactors at the Limerick Clean Energy Center on Sanatoga Road, owned and operated by Constellation Energy Corp., was recently completed during a scheduled outage, the company said Wednesday (June 3, 2026).
“During this outage, we safely completed upgrades that will allow Limerick Unit 1 to continue to deliver dependable, emissions-free electricity for decades to come,” Limerick Site Vice President Marty Bonifanti says. It was deemed “as an opportunity to invest in the plant’s long-term performance.”
Work performed during the outage reportedly included cooling tower performance upgrades, generator component replacements, and other projects.
The station’s two boiling water reactors are capable of delivering 2,317 megawatts of energy, sufficient to power 1.7 million homes, according to the company.
Its work on Unit 1 work represents a $90 million investment in the facility, and also resulted in area economic benefits, Constellation adds. During the outage, the company brought in what it describes as “hundreds of skilled workers who support local businesses.” They and others comprised an outage workforce of about 1,400 skilled electricians, pipefitters, welders, carpenters, laborers, steamfitters and other tradespeople.

An Economic ‘Injection’
“Men and women of the Pennsylvania Building Trades rely on the good-paying jobs that result from these refueling outages,” Pennsylvania State Building Trades President Rob Bair notes.
Many were in the area for more than 20 days, keeping some area hotels, restaurants, and shops busy. Additionally, Constellation reports the workers raised more than $12,000 to be distributed among selected local charities.
“Limerick’s refueling outages are a powerful and welcome injection into the TriCounty Area’s economy,” Harrison Santangelo, president of the TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce, believes. The “influx of temporary residents generates substantial spending at our local restaurants and retail businesses, creating a positive economic ripple effect that benefits our entire community,” Santangelo says.
The Limerick center during 2026 will account for around $5.6 million in property taxes for schools, roads and other public services, Constellation estimates. During the past year, Constellation and its foundation also donated more than $320,000 to area non-profit organizations. Its employees also volunteered more than 4,700 hours for community tasks and projects.
