LIMERICK PA – Airports in Limerick and Toughkenamon (Chester County) won separate grants, with a combined value of more than $3.8 million, to build new hangars are their respective fields, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reports.
The local awards were part of what the state calls a nearly $10 million “investment in projects” at eight airports across the state. The money is designated for facility improvements, infrastructure preservation, and development, the department adds.
Heritage Field, 3310 W. Ridge Pk., Limerick, will receive $2,876,340 of state funds to construct a corporate hangar. New Garden Airport in Toughkenamon will receive 954,000 to construct a 10-unit T-hangar.
Funding for both projects, and the remaining six in Allegheny, Bucks (2), Erie, Luzerne, and Lycoming counties, is being drawn from the state Capital Budget through the bond-supported Aviation Transportation Assistance Program.
Statewide, A $34 Billion Impact
State officials say Pennsylvania’s aviation industry employs more than 226,000 people, with nearly $12.5 billion in payroll and employment benefits, and a $34 billion annual economic impact.
The state’s regional airports offer services that including limited passenger air, air cargo and freight flights. They also support operations for police and law enforcement, emergency medical services, firefighting, and disaster and emergency response.
