GOODLETTSVILLE TN – Eight non-profit organizations across Montgomery, Berks, and Chester counties have won a share of $370,000 distributed throughout Pennsylvania by the Tennessee-based Dollar General Literacy Foundation, it announced Friday (May 8, 2026).
Of the $370,000 statewide total, more than $56,000 was awarded by the foundation to groups in Pottstown, Norristown (2), Honey Brook, Kennett Square, Phoenixville, and Reading (2). All grants are intended to support adult, family, and summer literacy programs in states where Dollar General operates.
In all, the foundation issued nearly $16 million in grants nationwide, substantially more than the $13.2 million granted last year. Receiving grants by name, location, and amount are:
- YWCA Tri-County Area, Pottstown, $10,000;
- ACLAMO, Norristown, $3,000;
- Norristown Page Turners, Norristown, $3,000;
- Chester County Children’s Foundation, Honey Brook, $3,000;
- Adult Literacy Program At Kennett Library, Kennett Square, $10,000;
- Kate’s Casa Inc., Phoenixville, $7,500;
- Bernardine Franciscan Sisters, Reading, $10,000; and
- Literacy Council Of Reading-Berks Inc., Reading, $10,000.
The foundation’s primary focus remains “on making meaningful investments in students, teachers, and organizations that support literacy and learning at every stage of life,” according to its executive director, Denine Torr.
The funds will “help educators enhance their instruction, and create opportunities that help empower students to reach their full potential,” Torr adds.
The foundation estimates this year’s round of its contributions would affect nearly 30,000 individuals. Since 1993, it has awarded more than $292 million in grants to non-profits. It reports having helped more than 25 million individuals take first steps toward literacy, a general education diploma, or English proficiency.
