Local Grants Benefit Water Education Programs

April 28, 2026

MECHANICSBURG PA – Two area organizations were among 12 statewide that received grants Thursday (April 23, 2026) from the American Water Charitable Foundation, to support “the well-being of the environment and our watersheds,” it reports.

  • Named as a grant winner was the Schwenksville-based Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy, which received $20,000 to support “environmentally-centered learning opportunities” for western Montgomery County students in its Floating Classroom STEM Education Program.
  • Also named was the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers in Luzerne PA, receiving $8,108, to offer workshops for watershed leaders exploring current water issues, and to strengthen collaboration across eastern Pennsylvania.

The remaining 10 recipients were awarded grants for activities elsewhere in the state. The foundation is a philanthropic non-profit organization created by American Water, of which Pennsylvania American Water is a subsidiary. In total, the foundation’s grant round provided $243,349 in financial support. Its water and environment grants are part of the foundation’s “Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program.”

“We … are thankful for the many dedicated community partners we’re able to collaborate with and support, as they work to address environmental concerns, offer educational resources and help ensure the health and vitality of our state for generations to come,” Pennsylvania American President Justin Ladner says.

Pennsylvania American Water says it is the largest regulated water utility in the state. The company reports it employs about 1,200 people who work “to provide safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater services” to about 2.5 million residents.
