HARRISBURG PA – Municipalities in Montgomery, Berks, and Chester counties will benefit from nearly $460.8 million being distributed in March by the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) for local road and bridge maintenance. Generally, the funding helps cover costs of tasks like snow removal and road repaving.
Montgomery County is scheduled to receive $23.73 million; Berks, $14.45 million, and Chester, $17.21 million. The money, sent annually, comes from Pennsylvania gas tax revenues. The statewide total is about $724,300 less than what the state handed out during 2025, and local totals are similarly reduced.
That’s due in part to the growth of “electric vehicles, alternative fuels, and new technologies reshaping how we travel,” according to the PA State Association of Township Supervisors. It claims the gas tax represents “traditional revenue streams that support local infrastructure (and) are not keeping pace.” Instead, it is calling for more “sustainable, long-term funding solutions.”
The amounts allocated to each municipality are based on their populations and miles of locally owned roads, PennDOT says.
