Candlelight Tours, Christmas Tea on Historic Trappe List

TRAPPE PA – Candlelight tours through historic spaces filled with Pennsylvania German holiday cheer. A genuine holiday tea, intended to make your Christmas decidedly different and special. Even a colonial Christmas cocktail party! All are planned for the holidays by the museums of Historic Trappe.

Remaining on its calendar are:

  • Dec. 6-7, Candlelight Tours;
  • Dec. 13, Christmas Tea at Sumneytown Hotel, and Tour of the Hiester House;
  • Dec. 13-14, A Colonial Christmas at the Hiester House; and
  • Dec. 14, A Colonial Christmas Tour and Cocktail Party at the Hiester House.

Details for each event are below.

All require special admission. Some events are timed, with tickets available by online purchase only and no walk-in entry offered. A Dec. 20 Christmas baking workshop also is scheduled, but as of Wednesday (Nov. 19) tickets for it were already sold out.

Candlelight Tours

Savor the sights, sounds, and aromas of a Pennsylvania German Christmas on Dec. 6 (Saturday) from 3-9 p.m., and Dec. 7 (Sunday) from noon to 4 p.m.

Travel back in time at the Muhlenberg House for candlelight tours, where interpreters in authentic period clothing will share stories from the Muhlenberg family in each room. Chat with Pastor Muhlenberg in his office, and then step into the dining room where a festive meal awaits.

Inside the Speaker’s House, warm yourself by the fire, and see what the hearth cook is preparing in its newly-restored kitchen wing. Also take a sneak peek at ongoing restoration work in the main house.

At the Dewees Tavern, its galleries are decorated for Christmas with German Erzgebirge woodcarvings, a Moravian Christmas pyramid, Noah’s arks, and more.

Admission of $20 per person includes a timed ticket for candlelight tours of the Muhlenberg House, in addition to entrance at the Dewees Tavern and Speaker’s House. Pricing discounts are available for a family of four, members, seniors, and youths. Buying tickets online is suggested; a limited number of tickets may be available at the door but cannot be guaranteed.

Parking is at St. Luke’s Church, 200 W. Main St.

Christmas Tea at Sumneytown Hotel, and Tour of the Hiester House

Celebrate the magic of the season with a festive afternoon tea Dec. 13 (Saturday) from 1-3 p.m. at the historic Sumneytown Hotel. It will be beautifully decorated for Christmas. Enjoy fine teas, savory sandwiches, and sweet treats in a cozy holiday setting.

Then, step back in time on an exclusive tour of the nearby Hiester House, also decorated in the spirit of Christmas past. Explore the home from cellar to attic to celebrate the season with history, charm, and cheer.

Tickets cost $100 per person and person include tea and the tour, and are available only by online purchase. All proceeds benefit Historic Trappe’s educational programs.

Sumneytown Hotel is located at 3188 Main St., Green Lane PA. Address and parking instructions for the Hiester House tour will be e-mailed to ticket holders prior to the event.

A Colonial Christmas at the Hiester House

This holiday season step inside the Hiester House, built near Sumneytown PA during 1757, to experience the warmth and charm of Christmas past. The home retains nearly all of its original features. They include five fireplaces and crafted wrought-iron hardware. From cellar to attic, each room is adorned with festive decorations that capture the spirit and traditions of a colonial Christmas.

Admission is by timed ticket only on Dec. 13 (Saturday) at 10 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m.; or Dec. 14 (Sunday) at noon and 2 p.m. Tickets cost $50 per person, and are available by advance online purchase only; none are offered at the door. All proceeds benefit Historic Trappe’s educational programs.

A Colonial Christmas Tour and Cocktail Party, at the Hiester House

Make the holiday memorable Dec. 14 (Sunday) from 4:30-7:30 p.m., with an exclusive tour and festive cocktail party, at the historic Hiester House.

Built in 1757, this colonial home still boasts its original fireplaces and crafted wrought-iron hardware. From cellar to attic, every room shines with decorations inspired by the traditions of Christmas past. After exploring the house, raise a glass at our holiday reception featuring seasonal cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

Tickets cost $100 per person, and are available by advance online purchase only; none are offered at the door. They include a full tour, plus an exclusive cocktail party with drinks and appetizers. Address and parking instructions will be e-mailed to ticket holders before the event.

All proceeds benefit Historic Trappe’s educational programs.
