In Gilbertsville, Faster Heart Scans with Less Radiation

In Gilbertsville, Faster Heart Scans with Less Radiation

November 29, 2025

GILBERTSVILLE PA – Installation of a latest-generation heart and chest scanner at Lehigh Valley Hospital- Gilbertsville, 1109 Grosser Rd., is giving physicians a view of a patient’s entire heart within the time it takes to beat only once, the hospital says.

It also offers an additional benefit. Besides the technology’s speed and efficiency, the hospital reported Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2025), it exposes the patient to “very limited radiation.”

Investment in an Arineta cardiovascular and thoracic computed tomography (CT) scanner is providing medical personnel with “faster scans without compromising quality and accuracy,” according to Dr. Kunal Patel. He is the director of non-invasive cardiac imaging at the Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute.

The Gilbertsville hospital, opened during June 2024, apparently is the first Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) facility to receive this model of Arineta scanner. “We are actively looking into expanding and adding Arineta CT scanners to other locations across LVHN in the future,” Patel notes.

The machine’s profile is small, Patel acknowledges, but it is capable of supplying “comprehensive clinical information for diagnosis and therapy planning.” It also can generate imaging for patients with irregular and fast heart rates. If needed, it can create a type of ‘head-to-toe’ patient cardiovascular map.

Personnel at the institute are collaborating with Medical Imaging of Lehigh Valley P.C. on protocols and diagnostic interpretation standards.

Valuable in Planning Surgeries

The network believes the Arineta CT scanner can be used to assist in planning surgeries involving:

  • Peripheral vascular, electrophysiology, and thoracic procedures;
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to treat a diseased or malfunctioning aortic heart valve;
  • Implantation of the WATCHMAN™-brand device, to treat non,valvular atrial fibrillation; and
  • Implantation of the MitraClip™-brand device to treat mitral valve regurgitation.

The network says it is a regional leader of specialized programs in women’s heart health, sports cardiology, advanced heart failure technologies, peripheral vascular and venous care, and rhythm disturbance care.
