YWCA ‘Week Without Violence’ Returns with Party, Services

POTTSTOWN PA – Dance, poetry, and music performances; games, food, community resource tables, and the annual restoration of the Black Lives Matter art on the 300 block of King Street are planned this weekend for the YWCA Tri-County Area “Week Without Violence” campaign. Observances of the week began Monday (Oct. 21).

Volunteers, YWCA staff members, and other community partners were scheduled to begin the street art restoration Thursday (Oct. 24) at 10 a.m. They expected to finish Friday (Oct. 25) before 5 p.m.

It will be followed Saturday (Oct. 26) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. by the YWCA’s block-wide event, at which more than 35 organizations will share their community services and resources. Additionally, all YWCA departments will be available to discuss program opportunities. Throughout the day, groups also will offer give-aways that include necessities like coats, backpacks, socks, diapers, and other items.

Special Activities are Scheduled, Too

  • Performances by crowd-engaging hip-hop breakdancers, who will invite young and old to celebrate through movement;
  • The Mlanjeni Magical Theatre, an African theatre company, with a form of east African theater called “Muungamano.” It is one of Africa’s interdisciplinary art forms utilizing acting along with puppets, magical illusions, folk music and dance in traditional storytelling;
  • A disc jockey to keep toes tapping; and
  • Local dignitaries who will highlight community efforts.

The event is sponsored this year by Constellation Energy, Hobart’s Run, Univest Financial, Sheetz, YWCA-USA, and the Allstate Foundation.
