KING OF PRUSSIA PA – State construction activities prompted lane closures and flagging controls in Lower Pottsgrove Township through Thursday (Feb. 22, 2024), and also will cause a road closure during the next several weeks.
South Sanatoga Road in the township will be closed for more than a month, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced. Affected by shorter-term lane closures are U.S. Route 422 and Porter Road.
The department is in initial stages of an $83.6 million project to reconstruct and improve about 1.7 miles of the 422 expressway. It also will replace two bridges between its Sanatoga interchange and Porter Road in Lower Pottsgrove Township.
Some of the work requires water and sewer relocation on South Sanatoga Road, between Linfield Road and East High Street. As a result, PennDOT said, an around-the-clock closure of the road will begin March 4 (Monday) and last until April 15 (Monday). Drivers will be re-directed on a detour using Linfield Road, Evergreen Road and High Street.
Other travel restrictions took effect Monday (Feb. 19), and continue through Thursday. They include:
- A single lane closure in place on westbound U.S. 422 daily from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m., between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard, for clearing, grubbing (root removal) and drainage installation;
- A single lane closure in place on eastbound U.S. 422 daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., between Armand Hammer Boulevard and Evergreen Road, for clearing, grubbing and drainage installation; and
- An intermittent single lane flagging pattern in place on Porter Road daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., between High Street and Sanatoga Station Road, for clearing and grubbing.
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas. Back-ups and delays will occur, PennDOT said. All scheduled activities depend on acceptable weather.
As part of the project, 422 will be reconstructed on both existing and revised alignments to improve horizontal curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance to enhance travel and safety.
Also, a culvert at Sprogels Run, located just east of Porter Road, along with an existing single-span bridge carrying U.S. 422 over Porter Road, will be removed and replaced with a new two-span bridge. The bridge carrying U.S. 422 over South Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek will also be reconstructed and widened.
