POTTSTOWN, PA – Described by Steel River Playhouse as a “thought-provoking” piece to open the new year, “The Cake” – by Bekah Brunstetter, writer for the NBC Television hit “This Is Us” – opens Feb. 9 (Friday) at the theater, 245 E. High St. It’s scheduled to run for two weekends only, through Feb. 18 (Sunday).
The story: “This delicious comedy tells the story of Della’s legendary North Carolina bakery. Della is overjoyed when her best friend’s daughter returns from New York to get married, and asks Della to make her wedding cake. Della, a sweet-natured Christian, is forced to re-examine her deeply held beliefs, and her own marriage, when she realizes there is not one bride but two.”
The show is directed by Leena Devlin and contains strong language and adult themes. “I am so excited to bring this play to the Steel River audiences,” Devlin said. “This is such a sweet and funny play, all while challenging us to confront our own prejudices and biases, and potentially even reevaluate our ideas of acceptance and inclusion.”

Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights (Feb. 9-10 and Feb. 16-17) at 7 p.m., and Sundays (Feb. 11 and 18) at 2 p.m. An additional “relaxed performance” for individuals who would enjoy a performance where they can freely express themselves, or with ADD, ADHD, Dementia, Autism, or sensory sensitivities, is scheduled for Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.
Running time for this one-act show is about 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are selling quickly, and the playhouse reports one performance already sold out. Tickets cost $29 for adults, $24 for seniors age 65 and older, and $17 for students.
