“Odysseus and the Sirens,” by Eric Armusik

POTTSTOWN PA – Classical figurative artist Eric Armusik, acclaimed by some experts as “one of today’s strongest purveyors of traditional figurative painting,” will be the featured speaker Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2023) during this month’s art lecture presented by the Pottstown Area Artists Guild.

Armusik’s talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Boyer Gallery of The Hill School Center for the Arts, 860 Beech St. The event is free to attend and open to the public, but reservations are requested and can be made online.

The artist’s presentation will open with a demonstration of his methods, as he creates a portrait sketch in oil of a volunteer from the audience. Following the demonstration, he intends to show and discuss a number of his works.

Armusik in 1991 attended Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting, with a minor in art history that focused on Baroque art. In 1995 he received the Margaret Giffen Shoenfelder Memorial Scholarship for the Arts, and completed his art history minor abroad during a semester in Todi, Italy.

During his art classes, Armusik drew from original paintings, architecture, and sculptures by old masters such as Michaelangelo, Bernini, Caravaggio, Rubens, and Donatello. The rare opportunity to study masterworks by Baroque painters Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, he has said, had a profound effect on the quality of his work. It also focused the inspiration he experienced as a child.

After years of learning Old Masters’ techniques, Armusik further honed his skills at the Philadelphia studio of internationally known realism artist and portrait painter Nelson Shanks. In 2003 Armusik was selected to represent the United States in Florence, Italy, at the Biennale Internazionale Dell Arte Contemporanea. Several of his paintings were exhibited there.

The Pottstown Area Artists Guild describes itself as “a dynamic organization of local artists and art lovers.” Its members “seek to promote, inspire, and support the artistic spirit in the Tri-County communities around Pottstown … though a Masters of Art lecture series, art exhibitions, collaboration with the Montgomery County Community College and local businesses.
