ELYSBURG PA – For the fifth consecutive year a Knoebels Amusement Resort wooden roller coaster, “The Phoenix,” won a national award Monday (Sept. 11, 2023) as the best ride of its type in the country. The award announcement came from Amusement Today, a media company that covers the entertainment attractions industry.

Knoebels is located on 45 acres in Elysburg PA, about 10 miles south of Bloomsburg and a roughly two-hour drive from Pottstown. It claims to be “America’s largest free-admission amusement park,” with free parking, free entertainment, and free picnic facilities. It includes 64 different rides: 21 for thrill seekers, 23 for children, and 20 for families.

Harrisburg PA television station WHTM reported the landmark Knoebels coaster, obviously enjoyed by the thrillists, has “made the top 10 (list) each year for 25 years.”

According to the park’s history, the coaster was purchased by Knoebels in the 1980s from a Texas amusement center that was closing. It was dismantled and rebuilt at the Pennsylvania site in 1985, and renamed as The Phoenix.

Amusement Today also said Knoebels won another Golden Ticket honor, Best Food award, for a 20th year.
