GETTYSBURG PA – The Gettysburg Railway, a new tourist excursion railroad train that “brings history to life” between Gettysburg and Mount Holly Springs PA, is being launched by Patriot Rail, the company reports.
As Patriot’s latest excursion train, it provides a passenger railcar journey “through the Adams County countryside,” company CEO Brandy Christian says. The route also represents further expansion of Patriot’s newly formed excursion division, she notes.
The attraction offers passengers what Patriot describes as “a unique blend” of historical storytelling, cultural immersion, and country views along a 25-mile line. Trains depart from the restored former Gettysburg and Harrisburg Railroad Depot, built in 1884.

Highlights of the experience reportedly include:
- Unique views of the Eternal Light Peace Memorial in Gettysburg National Military Park, and the surrounding rolling countryside;
- An engaging narration about Adams County history, including transformative Civil War figures and events; and
- Themed rides and private event space, festive holiday excursions, and rail cars perfect for special occasions.
The railway represents “a moving tribute to the stories that shaped our nation,” Karl Pietrzak, president and CEO of Destination Gettysburg, observes. Riders will “connect with the past in a way that’s immersive, educational, and truly memorable,” he adds. Destination Gettysburg is the official destination marketing organization for Gettysburg and Adams County.
Charm, Comfort in Fully Renovated Coaches
The Gettysburg railway features fully renovated 1950s-era Budd passenger coaches, according to the company. They have been “transformed into first-class passenger railcars that preserve their historic charm, while offering modern comfort,” it adds. Its service includes a café car offering snacks and refreshments.
During the season, the café car will supply a venue for special onboard events. They will be catered by a culinary group at Gettysburg College, and the Wyndham Gettysburg Hotel and Conference Center.

Patriot first entered the excursion business 10 years ago with the Blue Ridge Scenic Excursion Railway. It’s based in the Blue Ridge Mountains, between Blue Ridge GA and McCaysville TN. In 2023, the company added two New Hampshire excursion trains in Lincoln NH, and Meredith NH. It also opened a Rail Bike adventure in Laconia NH.
The Gettysburg line is set to open to the public Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays beginning Aug. 22, its ticketing portal shows. Tickets will available online and at the depot. More information, schedules, and ticketing also are available online.
During 2023, the military park and its famous Civil War battlefields attracted 724,000 visitors. The nearby Eisenhower National Historic Site drew another 98,000 guests. Gettysburg is a 110-mile drive from the greater Pottstown area, primarily over Interstate 76.
Patriot Rail is a short line and regional rail service provider in the United States. It offers essential rail freight transportation and ancillary rail services across 24 states and over 1,200 miles of track.
