July 28, 2025

WEST CHESTER PA – Recreation-related projects in Spring City and Phoenixville have won a combined total of more than $1 million in grant funds, the Chester County Board of Commissioners reports.

Spring City, Phoenixville Win Grants for Recreation Use

A Thursday (July 24, 2025) media release states the money is being distributed under the 2025-’26 Community Revitalization Program. Overall, commissioners unanimously approved grants worth about $5 million to fund 12 projects.

  • In Spring City, its $600,000 is budgeted for improvements to the Schuylkill River boat launch at the end of Gay Street. It provides river access for boats, kayaks, and fishing.
  • In Phoenixville, $550,000 will be used to install a solar panel array at the borough Recreation Center on Franklin Avenue.

Ten Other Municipalities Also Benefit

Also receiving funding for specified projects were the Chester County municipalities of Atglen, $540,000; Honey Brook Borough, $490,000; the city of Coatesville, $460,000; West Chester, $425,000; West Grove, $425,000; Oxford, $395,000; Kennett Square, $350,000; Avondale, $310,000; Downingtown, $300,000; and Parkesburg, $155,000.

Projects eligible for grant funding, according to county Community Development Director Dolores Colligan, are activities that support the county ClimateAction plan, as well as improvements to street-scapes, parking facilities, parks and trails, and eliminating urban blight. Some related to sewer and water mains, or storm water drainage, may also qualify.
