POTTSTOWN PA – In two holiday concert performances scheduled for Dec. 7 and 8 (2024; Saturday and Sunday), The Coventry Singers will continue a tradition that spans the group’s 52-year history.
The concerts, titled “December In My Hometown,” are set for:
- Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. in Cedarville Methodist Church, 1092 Laurelwood Rd.. Pottstown; and
- Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. in St. John’s Lutheran Church, 555 St. John’s Cir., Phoenixville.
The program features works by Johann Pachelbel, Dietrich Buxtehude, John Rutter, Dan Forrest and Pinkzebra. Both events are free to attend and open to the public. Free will offerings, however, will be gratefully accepted.
Coventry Singers is a community choral organization of auditioned singers known for tackling diverse and challenging choral music. Over the decades, its dozens of singers has performed major choral works that include those of Handel, Bach, Haydn, Rutter, Finzi and Faure. They also cover lighter works, both sacred and secular, with frequent doses of humor and frivolity.
The group’s singers come from all walks of life. Some have professional musical experience. Some are or have been teachers of music. Many are people who just love to sing, and welcome musical challenges.
About the Musical Director, and Accompanist
Musical Director Cheryl Markofski leads The Coventry Singers, and served in the same capacity from 2002-2009. She graduated from Florida State University with bachelor’ and master’s degrees in vocal performance, and obtained a music education certification from West Chester University.
While working on her masters degree, she held a graduate teaching assistantship in choral conducting. Markofski has done graduate work in voice performance at the University of Texas. Additionally, she has sung professionally in operas and concerts along the Atlantic Coast, and been a guest soloist with the Reading and Pottstown symphonies.
Markofski is a music teacher retired from the Owen J. Roberts School District. Under her direction, its middle school choirs were regularly awarded first prize, and over all best chorus, awards at competitions in Hershey PA. In 2020, she was awarded the Chester County Citadel Heart of Learning.
Accompanist Eleanor Lundy continues in her fourth season with The Coventry Singers. She taught piano for many years, and served as a church choir director, organist, musical director, and substitute musician at several churches in New England and Montgomery County. She attended the University of New Hampshire, and later graduated from Rosemont College.
