POTTSTOWN PA – A trio of kid-inspiring events – intended to encourage creativity, exploration, and plenty of smiles – are on tap during October at the Pottstown Children’s Discovery Center, 95 S. Hanover St.
- A “Mommy and Me” ceramic art event is set for Oct. 19;
- A night of trick-or-treating and other Halloween-related fun is on the discovery center calendar for Oct. 24; and
- Visitors will have a chance to cover themselves with goo, and lots of other messy stuff, during the center’s Oct. 26 messy challenge. Best part about that for adults, it notes, is that the clean-up is left to someone else!
Mommy and Me Painting Fund-Raiser
The center’s Oct. 19 (Saturday) painting event for “Mommy and Me,” from 9-10 a.m., fulfills three roles. It offers creative fun that keeps adults and children busy completing ceramic masterpieces. It raises money to continue the museum’s mission of benefiting Pottstown area families. Finally, the finished pieces will enhance the center’s Exploration Studio walls.
“Come make your mark in Pottstown Children’s Discovery Center!,” organizers urge. “During this fund-raiser, paint a ceramic tile” that will be used as part of a backsplash in the studio, they report. Each participant receives a 4-inch-square ceramic tile that they can paint and decorate, and which will later permanently installed as part of the structure.
Register for the event online. Searing is limited, and early registration is advised. Tickets cost $20 for one adult and a child. Additional children’s tickets cost $10 each. Tickets do not include entry to the center following the activity. Those can be purchased, if desired, at the check-in desk following the event.
A Night in the Discovery Center
For those who have ever wondered what the center is like at night, when its lights go out, its staff claims Oct. 24 (Thursday) from 5-7 p.m. is a chance to find out! “Come dressed in (a) costume for a fun night of trick-or-treating” there, they say. Games and a craft activity are planned. “Don’t miss this Spooktakular night,” staffers add.
Besides a general admission ticket to the museum itself (it costs $10 for all ages, but is free to center members), there’s no additional cost for the fun.
The Fall Messy Challenge
What a better way to celebrate fall than to make a mess? Both kids and adults are likely to enjoy the discovery center’s indoor “Fall Messy Challenge,” scheduled for Oct. 26 (Saturday) from 2-4 p.m.
“As autumn arrives, children are eager to engage in play and creativity,” the center notes, and its event is available to help make that happen. The staff has planned an “exciting and messy obstacle course for all participants,” it says. They’ll “navigate through silly string webs, spaghetti pools, eyeball buckets, bubble fog,” pumpkin-gut slime, a corn pool, and a variety of other messes.
Before they do, though, some of Pottstown’s community leaders will have their own opportunity to get down and dirty on the course, according to the center.
The event also features pumpkin-painting, a fall-themed photo area by Laurel and Lace, and sensory play zones. Participant tickets cost $5 each for center members, and $15 for non-members (which also includes play in the discovery center).
The discovery center is regularly open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep up with what’s going on there by subscribing online to its free newsletter, or get more information by making a request at its website contact page.
