LOWER FREDERICK PA – Saturday (Sept. 14, 2024) is expected to be filled with leisure-time activity in Lower Frederick Township. Its annual Movie On The Mountain drive-in event, a cooperative effort with neighboring municipalities, is planned during the evening. The first of its Perkiomen Pacers’ Trail Walks is on the schedule for earlier during the day.
Pursuing a leisurely pace
A free community walking group called “The Perkiomen Pacers” has been created by the township Parks and Recreation Board. Dozens of people on Facebook have already indicated their interest in its first foray, set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon along the Perkiomen Trail starting in Foy Park, 1 Main St., Spring Mount. The walk is in partnership with the Schwenksville-based Perkiomen Railroad Historical Society.
As many area residents know, the trail is primarily located on a former railroad bed. The park itself was home to the Spring Mount train station. Members of the society during the walk will discuss the history of the former railroad, and point out its remnants that still remain on or near the trail.
Car-pooling to the park is encouraged. Walkers are recommended to wear suitable shoes, comfortable clothing, and to bring a water bottle. Be advised that no bathrooms will be available along the walk.
Saturday’s ‘Movie on the Mountain’
Lower Frederick, Upper Frederick, and Upper Salford townships all are cooperating to present Saturday’s free Movie on the Mountain event at dusk (gates open at 6:30 p.m.) in the lower parking lot of the Spring Mountain Adventures resort, 757 Spring Mount Rd., Schwenksville. The Disney movie “Wish” will be screened.
Free popcorn is available for snacking. Additionally, representatives of Engage Art Studio will provide face-painting. Glow sticks will be available to further enjoy an evening under the stars. The Mister Softee ice cream truck will be on-site too, offering treats available for purchase.
The event is sponsored by Victory Bank.
Other activities round out the township’s fall activities schedule. Here’s what they include:
Fall is festival season
The township’s popular Fall Festival remains in the planning stages, but is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 5 (Saturday). Details should be available soon, its staff reports.
Worthwhile reading ahead
It’s not too late to visit the library, a bookstore, or an online outlet to pick up and read a copy of “West With Giraffes,” by author Lynda Rutledge. It’s the next book up for discussion by the Lower Frederick Book Club, scheduled to meet rain or shine on Sept. 21 (Saturday) at 10:30 a.m. at the pavilion in Cuddy Park, 102 Colonial Dr., Perkiomenville.
“West With Giraffes,” a novel published in February 2021, is described on Amazon Books as “an emotional, rousing novel.” Rutledge draws inspiration from “the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America.” Her book is “part adventure, part historical saga, and part coming-of-age love story,” the website adds.
No advance registration is needed to attend, but an online sign-up would be appreciated, the club reports. Refreshments will be provided, and participants also receive “the official Lower Frederick Book Club bookmark.” Want to be extra comfortable? Bring along a beach chair or blanket for seating purposes.
The event is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Board. The last book club meeting of the season also is already on the calendar, scheduled for Oct. 19 (Saturday), but the book selection has yet to be announced.
Trunk-Or-Treat with the police
The Lower Frederick Police Department’s annual Trunk-Or-Treat event is planned for Oct. 20 (Sunday) from noon to 3 p.m. at Foy Park, 1 Main St., Spring Mount. It offers a safe and fun way for children to revel in the Halloween spirit without having to go from house to house at night. Musical entertainment and activities are featured, as well as plenty of sweet stuff to sample or hoard.
A rain date of Oct. 27 has been added in case Mother Nature declines to cooperate.
Local businesses are encouraged to support the event. Those interested can contact Ofc. Karissa Lauer at 610-287-4434, Extension 3; or send her an e-mail at klauer@lowerfrederick.org.
