POTTSTOWN PA – An outdoor movie, Walt Disney’s “The Parent Trap,” is scheduled to be screened tonight (Wednesday, July 24, 2024) beginning at 8:30 p.m. in Pottstown’s Riverfront Park on College Drive. The event is free to attend and open to the public.
Want a before-movie treat? Arrive at 8 p.m. and line up for a free snack and beverage. Then, set up your own chairs or blankets in a favorite spot to see the show.
The entertainment is being provided by the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area and its Delaware River Watershed Fellow, Joy Falotico. She is one of several fellows working this year with up to 23 environmental centers – including Schuylkill Greenways – that are members of the Alliance for Watershed Education.
Fellows like Falotico work with their respective centers for 12 weeks during the summer. The fellowship program aims to increase engagement with environmental education programs, and inspire nearby communities to protect the watershed.
Fellows engage with community residents in a variety of ways. They can meet and talk with visitors to environmental centers, lead research initiatives, work in the center and on the water, or serve as a “Mobile Nature Center” guide for trail engagement.
The work of environmental centers
Environmental centers like Schuylkill Greenways, in turn, look to connect residents, visitors, and communities to their respective rivers and trails. The Schuylkill Greenways mission, it notes, is in part to serve as “a catalyst for civic engagement and economic development.” Ultimately, it seeks to “to foster stewardship of the watershed and its heritage.”
The heritage area and the Schuylkill River watershed are recognized “as one of America’s most significant cultural, historical and industrial regions,” the Greenways organization explains. Its boundaries cover the watershed in Schuylkill, Berks, Chester, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. The region “is nationally significant for the role that its people, places, and events played in the American, Industrial, and Environmental revolutions,” it adds.
