HARLEYSVILLE PA – Tree removals, fence repairs, playground improvements, the addition of parking spaces, and annual trout stocking at the “duck pond” (above) all are on a to-do list for Daniel “Dan” Roth Park, 312 Maple Ave., Lower Salford Township reported Tuesday (March 12, 2024).
At Roth, township public works employees are scheduled to:
- Remove two sweet gum trees near the pond, the growth of which has damaged a nearby walking path. Their branches have also begun to create hazards by falling around and into the pond itself, according to a township notice. Cutting them down will “provide a safer and cleaner environment for all who visit (including the ducks!),” it explained;
- Create a more level surface for the playground to ensure its safety for young children, and relocate and replace the area’s fencing. It’s been damaged by “years of patrons backing into the adjacent parking spaces, the township stated. Moving it further from the parking area should solve the problem;
- Add “a few additional parking spaces” to accommodate more visitor traffic. Roth is acknowledged to be one of the township’s “busier parks;” and
- Stock the pond with trout. This year’s planned stocking dates are March 28 (Friday) and April 11 (Thursday) at all three Lower Salford-sanctioned spots: Roth, behind the Harleysville Hotel; Briarwyck Pond; and Alderfer Road Pond.
The repairs may take some time, the township warned, and it thanked residents for their patience.
Fish by the rules
Township residents anxious to get out a pole and tackle box are reminded that a valid state fishing license is required at all township ponds. Obtain a license from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission online, or in person from an authorized fishing license agent in Montgomery County.
State-allowed fishing, the commission noted, ” begins at 8 a.m. on the first Saturday in April (this year, that’s April 6) and continues until midnight on Labor Day (Sept. 2, Monday).
A complete state guide to fishing in Pennsylvania also is available for free download online.
