GREEN LANE PA – It’s been more than two decades since Montgomery County developed a master plan for the operations, facilities, and visitor use of its 3,400-acre, three-lake Green Lane Park (above). Now the county, with four teams of professional planners and more than a year of preparation and public comment, has scheduled a final review of its new master plan.
The event, the fourth and last of public meetings about the document and its contents, is set for March 20 (2024; Wednesday) from 6:30-8:30 p.m., the county Planning Commission said in a Monday (March 4) media release.
Its location, however, remains yet to be announced. The commission directed interested members of the public to later check online for the meeting site.
Creating a blueprint for the future
The commission’s goal, it said, is to create a blueprint that guides future “county decision-making to provide a better park experience for visitors.” It intends to cover land stewardship, organization and policy, maintenance and management, environmental education and programming, and general site improvements.
Opportunities the county hopes the master plan addresses are for enhanced environmental stewardship, new recreational facilities, additional land preservation and protection, additional universally-accessible facilities, and programs that meet community needs. The plan also is expected to set priorities, actions, and cost estimates.
Green Lane Park currently offers a variety of year-round, outdoor activities and programs. They include fishing, boating and boat rentals, family and group camping, summer concerts, picnicking, 25 miles of trails for horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking, and two children’s playgrounds.
Available during winter, weather permitting, are cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and ice skating.
The park includes all or part of seven municipalities: Green Lane Borough, Marlborough Township, New Hanover Township, Pennsburg Borough, Red Hill Borough, Upper Frederick Township, and Upper Hanover Township.
Tasked with developing the plan with the commission are lead consultant Simone Collins Landscape Architecture of Norristown, assisted by Resource Environmental Services, Seiler + Drury Architects, and certified park and recreation professional Patrick Stasio. Earlier public meetings were held in April, September, and December 2023.
Documents available so far for public review online are:
- The 2000 Green Lane Park master plan,
- A 2018 Green Lane Park Stewardship Plan, developed in part with Natural Lands, and
- Agendas and follow-up notes from earlier master plan-related meetings.
