BOYERTOWN PA – The continuing popularity of a mobile video game called “Pokémon GO,” which got its start more than seven years ago with characters created by Japanese electronics maker Nintendo, has inspired a new challenge issued by Building A Better Boyertown (BaBB).
The non-profit and accredited Main Street organization promotes and supports the borough and its businesses. It plans to conduct its first public Pokémon GO tournament in 2024, accompanied by a community vendor event, according to BaBB.
The “Sanctum Series” tournament has already been scheduled for Feb. 18 (2024; Sunday) as a 9-hour event from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Boyertown YMCA, 301 W. Spring St.
Pokémon GO can be downloaded to phones on Apple and Android operating systems. It uses each phone’s location finder and clock to detect where and when players are in the game, according to an introductory article on Vox.com. It then makes Pokémon characters “appear” in augmented reality around the player, as seen on the phone screen.
The player’s goal: capture, tame, and train characters for tournament battles against competing teams.
The event is scheduled to include plenty of professional and casual game playing, content creators, broadcast experts, local vendors, and a variety of food offerings. The current vendors list includes:

- The Ha-Pi Studio,
- Yum At Hart,
- Nerdy Girlie Crafts,
- Noodle Crafts, and
- Sillyguy Trinkets.
The YMCA’s “Team Asylum,” a local e-sports group, is joining Building A Better Boyertown as tournament co-host. “Pokémon GO fans … whether you come to battle or just to watch, you’re not going to want to miss this!,” the BaBB newsletter proclaimed.
