Three U.S. Route 422 Lane Closures Scheduled This Week

422 Daytime Lane Closures Ahead, in Both Directions

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Temporary barriers and signs will be installed next week on U.S. Route 422 in Lower Pottsgrove Township as part of an $83.6 million Pennsylvania Department of Transportation project. It intends to reconstruct and improve about 1.7 miles of the expressway, and replace two bridges between the Sanatoga interchange and Porter Road.

PennDOT on Thursday (Nov. 30, 2023) advised drivers of coming travel restrictions:

  • From Dec. 4-8 (Monday through Friday) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., a single lane closure will be in place on eastbound 422 between Armand Hammer Boulevard and Evergreen Road; and also
  • From Dec. 4-8 (Monday through Friday) between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., a single lane closure will be in place on westbound 422 between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard.

Drivers are recommended to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas. PennDOT warned backups and delays will occur. Its scheduled activities depend on acceptable weather.

The project’s anticipated improvements

The project is to expected to extend the design life, and improve ride quality and safety, of 422. The work also will “improve the current condition of roadside elements” such as storm water basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guide rails and signs that are in poor shape, it said.

Additionally, it reported:

  • 422 “will be reconstructed on both existing and revised alignments to improve horizontal curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance.” All are intended to enhance travel and safety.
  • A culvert at Sprogels Run, located just east of Porter Road, as well as an existing single-span bridge carrying over Porter Road, will be removed and replaced with a new two-span bridge.
  • The bridge carrying 422 over Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek will also be reconstructed and widened.

Other improvements are said to include:

  • Reconstructing and lengthening the acceleration ramp from the Sanatoga interchange at Township Line Road to westbound 422;
  • Installing Intelligent Transportation System equipment and components along the 422 corridor and on arterial roadways;
  • Constructing sound barriers along portions of westbound 422;
  • Upgrading existing signage and installing new signage;
  • Replacing the closed system drainage system and cross culverts throughout the project limits; and
  • Improving storm water management facilities, including two extended detention basins.

This project will be the seventh to move to construction under PennDOT’s initiative to rebuild and improve the 422 Bypass near Pottstown, the agency noted. “Since 2012, PennDOT has invested more than $260 million to improve the U.S. 422 corridor in Montgomery and Chester counties,” it said.
