Boone Fall Lecture Follows Its Successful Heritage Day

BIRDSBORO PA – During the latest installment of the fall lecture series at the Daniel Boone Homestead in Birdsboro, volunteer Paul Trainor (at top) is scheduled to discuss Colonial American medicine and “the traveling apothecary.” His presentation will be held Nov. 12 (2023; Sunday) at 2 p.m. in the DeTurk Education Center on the homestead grounds, 400 Daniel Boone Rd.

Trainor, a part-time college professor and retired attorney, also will discuss “the important role of the military surgeon during the colonial and early American periods.” Trainor is a graduate of the New England School of Law, and the University of Massachusetts where he minored in history. He often presents history programs that focus on life in early Pennsylvania, and 18th century medical care.

The event is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $2 per person. No pets or smoking will be permitted.

The lectures are sponsored by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates. The homestead, also operated by the associates, is a state historic site is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

Boone Homestead celebrates Heritage Day success

Continuation of the lecture series, which began in early fall, follows the homestead’s successful completion of its 2023 Heritage Day Fall Festival on Oct. 22.

Heritage Day is the homestead’s largest event of the year. Members of the associates, on their Facebook page, described public response to the day as “amazing,” and acknowledged its success “would not be possible without the community’s support.”

Nearly 500 visitors were welcomed at its entrance center (above) for the annual living history program. Despite a varying breeze, they turned out to bask in bright sunshine, enjoy comfortable temperatures, and see a wide selection of 18th Century demonstrations, trades, and hands-on activities (below).
