A Post Road Trip

Care to guess what topped the pizzas?

EASTON PA – At the PA Bacon Fest on Saturday (Nov. 4, 2023), there were dishes you’d normally expect. Bacon macaroni and cheese. Pork belly grilled on a skewer. For those on a budget, bacon-wrapped sausages (at top).

Among dozens of vendor booths that lined streets in downtown Easton PA, though, one that attracted many gawkers was the place selling bacon cannoli. Forget a traditional pastry shell for the Italian dessert. Its sweet cream filling was instead pumped into a cylindrical bacon exterior. They were served as fast as they could be made; workers (above) created hundreds by the hour.

The heart of PA Bacon Fest is Easton’s circular town center, with streets that radiate outward in several directions. Many downtown streets were closed, and traffic was diverted around the people-clogged district. Parking was at a premium

A few burgers could be found at PA Bacon Fest, but many were a 50-50 mix of beef and ground bacon.
Others were all beef, but topped with bacon thicker than the burger itself.

Wok-fried noodles and bacon: an interesting combo

If bacon’s your thing – the aroma, the taste, and the likelihood that it can be used as an ingredient in almost anything from a dinner entrée to facial cream (no kidding) – then Easton was your place to be this weekend. The PA Bacon Fest, an annual event ranked among the top five of its kind in the country, continued through Sunday (Nov. 5).

It’s billed as “two days of grease, love, and happiness.” Travels With The Post made the hour-long, 50-mile journey there via Routes 663 and 309, and Interstate 78.

Skewered pork on an open flame offered a mouth watering aroma, but also filled the streets with smoke (above and below)

Hungry crowds meant there was no time to waste. Many vendor booths had up to a dozen people working at once

Musical entertainment played a big role Saturday. PA Bacon Fest has five separate stages with musicians and singers.
The stages also featured cooking demonstrations and a bacon-eating contest. How fast can you chow down a pound?
