BIRDSBORO PA – A Nov. 12 (2023; Sunday) discussion of Colonial American medicine and “the traveling apothecary” is the next featured presentation of the fall lecture series presented by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates at the homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Rd.
Speaker Paul Trainor, a part-time college professor and retired attorney, also will discuss “the important role of the military surgeon during the colonial and early American periods.” His talk is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in the DeTurk Education Center on the homestead property.
The state historic site is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and operated by the associates.
Trainor is a graduate of the New England School of Law, and the University of Massachusetts where he minored in history. The associates said he frequently presents living history programs that focus on life in early Pennsylvania, and 18th Century medical care.
The event is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $2 per person. No pets or smoking will be permitted.
The homestead is the birthplace of the famed frontiersman Daniel Boone, born in 1734. The Boone House, constructed in three stages throughout the 18th century, is a 10-room stone structure. The home is “fully furnished to the period” and situated on 579 acres of rolling countryside, according to the associates. It is located near Baumstown, halfway between Reading and Pottstown.
