POTTSTOWN PA – Favorite Dr. Seuss characters will come to life beginning Friday (Aug. 11, 2023), and at scheduled performances through Aug. 20 (Sunday), as Steel River Playhouse, 245 E. High St., kicks off its 2023-’24 season with “Seussical the Musical.”

Director Lisa Hendricks and Music Director Nathan M. Kendrick are joined by Choreographer Isabella Yackanicz, and a talented cast of student performers who are part of The Bridge program. The book is written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, with music by Flaherty and lyrics by Ahrens.

The Bridge is a hybrid of Steel River’s education and main stage programming. It consists of older (ages 13-21), more advanced students who must pass auditions to participate. The musical represents the first time a Bridge production has been included as part of the playhouse season subscription. “We think you will be amazed (by) our young performers,” Steel River said in a media release.

About ‘Seussical the Musical’

“Dive into the colorful world of Dr. Seuss, as The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who sets off to save a speck of dust containing The Whos from destruction,” according to the playhouse description. “Horton must protect The Whos from a world of doubters, while guarding an abandoned egg left to his care.”

“Ultimately the powers of friendship, imagination, loyalty, and community are challenged and emerge victorious.”

Performances will be held Aug. 11, 12, 18, and 19 at 7 p.m. Matinées are scheduled for Aug. 12, 13, and 20 at 2 p.m. An additional “relaxed performance” also is planned for Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. It is particularly suited, the playhouse indicated, “for individuals with ADD, ADHD, dementia, autism, sensory sensitivities, or any patron who would enjoy a performance where they can freely express themselves.”

The running time for this two-act show is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes, with one intermission. Tickets and seat choices are available now online, at $29 for adults, $24 for seniors age 65 or older, and $17 for students. Tickets also are available by calling the Steel River box office at 610-970-1199.
