BIRDSBORO PA – An Independence Day (July 4, 2023) event filled with re-enactors portraying Revolutionary War soldiers (at top), guided tours of historic buildings, and family-friendly activities is being planned in Birdsboro.
The staff of the Daniel Boone Homestead, the 1734 birthplace of the famed frontiersman, has scheduled the commemorative celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the homestead’s grounds, 400 Daniel Boone Rd. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for seniors age 65 and older, $5 for children from ages 6-17, and children age 5 and younger will be admitted free.
Pets, unless they are authorized service animals, and smoking are not allowed.
Visitors will learn about the different kinds of troops who fought for America’s freedom during the Revolutionary War, including the militia, Continentals, Dragoons, and Riflemen. A Dragoon presentation will demonstrate mounted soldiers and officers, and their roles in the Revolution.
Guided Boone House tours will be offered regularly throughout the day. The Boone House, constructed in three stages throughout the 18th century, is a 10-room stone structure fully furnished to the period and situated on 579 acres of rolling countryside. The nearby Bertolet Log House also will be open for tours.
There will also be plenty of activities for children (above), including a militia muster activity, colonial toys and games, and crafts. Children will get a chance to be “recruited” into the local militia as officers drum up for volunteers to fight the British. The new “recruits” will be taken through authentic eighteenth-century military drills and marches with wooden dummy guns.
Blacksmithing and gun-building demonstrations will be offered. The homestead’s volunteer blacksmith will produce iron work used in the military and on the home front. Visitors can also observe the town gunsmith, hard at work producing the arms necessary for the American Revolution.
Lunches and desserts will be available for purchase from a Munchiez Food Truck, and Cherry on Top ice cream truck, at the event.
The homestead is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and its daily historic operations are run by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates, a local non-profit organization. For more information, call 610-582-4900.
