In MontCo, Go Hike or Bike on National Trails Day

June 2, 2023

NORRISTOWN PA – Hikers, bikers, those just strolling or pushing strollers, and anyone else involved in Montgomery County’s “MontCo Trail Challenge,” are encouraged to get more credit as they cruise trail paths Saturday (June 3, 2023). The day is being observed as National Trails Day.

Several of the qualifying trails are located in western Montgomery County, and are easily accessible from the Pottstown, Schwenksville, Audubon, King of Prussia, and Norristown areas.

Unfamiliar with the challenge? It’s a fun promotion intended to have as many people as possible set foot on any of the county’s 17 participating trails between April 29 and Dec. 3 (Sunday).

Learn how to participate on its website, then follow its instructions to earn credits for prizes. The gifts being awarded aren’t glamorous, but the associated exercise and health benefits could be flattering, the county suggests.

A 2022 survey of challenge participants determined that about 88 percent visited a new park or trail; 90 percent learned something new about their community; 84 percent walked more; 30 percent biked more; about 14 percent ran more; 84 percent improved their physical health; and 96 percent improved their mental health.

In their update newsletter distributed Thursday (June 1), challenge representatives recommended 11 different trail segments where visitors could increase their credits without increasing pace or changing stride. To join the MontCo Trail Challenge, register online. For more information about the challenge, send an e-mail to trailchallenge@montgomerycountypa.gov.
