GOODLETTSVILLE TN – Two Owen J. Roberts elementary schools, and a King of Prussia non-profit group, are among 44 Pennsylvania winners in the most recent round of Dollar General Literacy Foundation Awards, the foundation reports.
The local awards are part of more than $150,000 distributed Sept. 10 across Pennsylvania, and a portion of more than $4.1 million the foundation presented nationwide. Recipients can use the funds for professional development opportunities. or to purchase books, technology, equipment or materials.
Its goal, the foundation says, is “to help extend a brighter future” students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
The local awardees were in:
- Pottstown, at East Coventry Elementary School, $4,000;
- Pottstown, at North Coventry Elementary School, $3,500; and
- King of Prussia, at RSVP Volunteers, $4,000.
“Through our youth literacy grants, we are honored to help strengthen schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations literacy programs and resources,” according to Denine Torr, the foundation’s executive director. “When students have access to books, technology and educational resources,” she adds, “they gain tools that can support their learning for years to come.”
The Pennsylvania grants are expected to affect the lives of about 20,000 individuals in the state, the foundation estimates.
Applications for 2027 Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants that support youth, family, summer, and adult literacy programs will be available in January 2027.
Since 1993, the foundation says it has awarded nearly $297 million in grants to non-profit organizations. It estimates they have assisted more than 26 million individuals with literacy, a general education diploma, or English proficiency.
