PENNSBURG PA – Ahead of the Fourth of July, the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is offering a workshop in which participants can learn how to create a patriotic Fraktur eagle painting. The event is scheduled for June 19 (2026; Saturday) from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the center, 105 Seminary St.
Revolutionary Fraktur also will be on display in the center. Its exhibit presents about 35 Pennsylvania German illuminated manuscripts, made in this region between 1763 and 1781. The exhibit and workshop both are part of the center’s observance of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Instructor Ruth Williams will lead the class in creating a 6-inch by 8-inch Fraktur eagle in watercolor on paper, inspired by a work in the museum’s collection. There also will be an option of adding Fraktur lettering or a date on the finished piece.
All materials and supplies are included as part of the $75 class fee. Those who prefer may bring their own paints and brushes, as well as a fine-tip waterproof pen in brown or black ink pen.
Advance registration is required. Reservations can be made online or by calling 215-679-3103.
The Schwenkfelder, the largest museum in the region, shares stories of the Pennsylvania German experience. It is open and free to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.

Another Successful Penn Dry Goods in the Books

PENNSBURG PA – The 2026 edition of the Penn Dry Goods educational and historic seminars, held May 15 and 16 at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center on Seminary Street, again successfully attracted hundreds of visitors, the center reports.
Penn Dry Goods annually features experts’ demonstrations on how to sew, knit, quilt, spin, and braid rugs. Selected dealers this year offered vintage textile dry goods, as well as quilts, samplers, rugs, and even buttons for sale. Among the most popular attractions were its quilt-turning sessions, which showed, described, and explained the intricacies of the quilt-making arts.
Because everyone loves a bargain, the expanded Penn Dry Goods rummage sale provided a variety of “great finds,” according to the center. They included fabrics, craft projects, notions, and historic patterns and books.
Planning for the 2027 event is already under way.
