BIRDSBORO PA – A fun-filled afternoon of hands-on activities and demonstrations for children and their families is planned for May 3 (2026; Sunday) from noon to 4 p.m., during Children’s Day at the Daniel Boone Homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Rd.
Kids will have opportunities to learn about Daniel Boone’s childhood in the Oley Valley. They can participate in various 18th Century tasks that include candle dipping, quill pen writing, butter making, tin-smithing, and others. Daniel’s father, Squire Boone, worked as a colonial weaver, so visitors also will see stages of textile processing.

To observe America’s 250th birthday, young visitors can pick up a copy of the children’s ‘Washington’s Orders,’ which will guide them through Revolutionary War activities. At the end they get to visit with General Washington, and receive a special letter marking their achievements.
Those who attend can learn about Daniel’s mother, Sarah Boone, and her famous butter and cheese. As they explore the spring cellar and smokehouse, homestead volunteers will talk about food preservation. The youngsters can lend a hand in making butter.
Tickets for the day cost $10 for adults, $8 for those age 65 and older, $5 for children between the ages of 6 and 17, and children age 5 and younger are admitted free. Tickets are available at the entrance. No pets other than service animals are allowed, and the Homestead property is a no-smoking area. Children’s Day is funded and presented by The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates, a local non-profit organization.

Games, Tours, and Colonial Life

Throughout the afternoon, volunteers additionally will teach children how to write with a quill pen, and dip candles, as they learn about handwriting, schooling, and lighting in the 18th Century. They will also see that not all time was devoted to chores. Participants can play colonial games and enjoy old-fashioned toys.
Also times during the day, visitors can take tours through the Boone House, the Bertolet Log House, and the Homestead barn. A new activity this year celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The homestead is the birthplace of famed frontiersman Daniel Boone, born in 1734. The Boone House, constructed in three stages throughout the 18th Century, is a 10-room stone structure fully furnished to the period on 579 acres of rolling countryside. It is located halfway between Reading and Pottstown, and one mile north of U.S. Route 422 near Baumstown. The homestead is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
