POTTSTOWN PA – Crews are expected to work through Friday (March 20, 2026) on U.S. Route 422 across Lower Pottsgrove and North Coventry townships as they complete a five-day project to install massive bridge beams that are part of the highway’s reconstruction.
Tractor trucks equipped with a specialized trailer system delivered steel-reinforced concrete beams Tuesday (March 17) to the site. Workers there could be seen preparing cranes to move the beams into place.
To accommodate the activity amid traffic, lane closures established by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will persist through Thursday (March 19) on westbound 422, and through Friday (March 20) on the eastbound side. In both cases, the closures extend between the highway’s Hanover Street and Evergreen Road interchanges.
Backups and delays occasionally occurred as the work progressed, PennDOT notes, although traffic often seemed to move at a brisk pace.
To avoid potential tie-ups, some drivers during the week opted to exit at the Sanatoga interchange, and bypass the construction by traveling westbound on East High Street. They then rejoined 422 at the Armand Hammer Boulevard interchange. Those decisions sometimes resulted in long lines of vehicles at traffic light intersections with Pleasantview Road, Sunnybrook Road, and Armand Hammer.
Part of an $83.6 Million Project
The agency advises drivers to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas. The work could be affected by, and depends upon, acceptable weather.
The work is part of a $83.6 million PennDOT project to reconstruct and improve about 2.1 miles of the expressway. It includes replacement of the bridges between Sanatoga and Porter Road in Lower Pottsgrove.
