Traffic Safety Grants Head to Trappe, Upper Providence

Traffic Safety Grants Head to Trappe, Upper Providence

February 12, 2026

HARRISBURG PA – Traffic safety projects in Trappe Borough and Upper Providence Township will receive a combined total of nearly $751,000 in new grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

The money arriving locally is part of an overall $27 million distributed Tuesday (Feb. 10, 2026) to 44 municipalities statewide for 51 safety projects.

The investment comes from revenues generated by the Automated Red-Light Enforcement program, in Philadelphia. The system photographs vehicles running through video-monitored stop lights, and then sends a violation penalty bill to the vehicle owner.

Projects and Grant Amounts

Benefiting locally are:

  • Trappe Borough, which will receive $120,640 to improve pedestrian and vehicular safety at the emergency signalized intersection of West Fifth Avenue and West Main Street; and
  • Upper Providence Township, which gets $630,330 for “a new channelization island for west-bound State Route 29, a pedestrian refuge island for the crossing of the east-leg intersection, new ADA- compliant curb ramps, crosswalks, and pedestrian signals with countdown timers and push buttons.”

Also winning grants in Montgomery County were Norristown, $437,686; Lansdale, $308,900; the Upper Dublin Township Municipal Authority, $500,000; Abington Township, $514,633; Conshohocken, $229,829; and Jenkintown, $101,950. Winning grants in Chester County were Downingtown, $65,469; Downingtown, $94,812; and East Caln Township, $257,187.

No grant awards were announced for Berks County.

An Abundance of Applicants

In this grant round, PennDOT reports, municipalities submitted 113 applications representing more than $67 million in requests. An eight-member committee chose the winners, “based on such criteria as safety benefits and effectiveness, cost, and local and regional impact,” according to the agency.

Since 2023, more than $60 million in enforcement revenues have paid to support 121 safety projects, PennDOT says. Projects that improve safety, enhance mobility, and reduce congestion can be considered for funding.
