PA Turned Greener in 2025 with Utility Tree Plantings
READING PA – More than 6,000 trees were donated by FirstEnergy Corp. and planted on properties within Pennsylvania by 62 employees at 16 events held during 2025, the electric utility company reported Wednesday (Feb. 4, 2026).
A FirstEnergy subsidiary, Metropolitan Edison, supplies service in parts of Montgomery, Berks, and Chester counties. Its trees in the state were among more than 30,000 trees also planted last year across parts of New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio by other subsidiaries.
The number of trees planted in 2025 exceeded the corporate parent’s goal, it added. Much of the work was done by local FirstEnergy Green Teams, it reported. Its target for 2026 includes planting more than 26,000 additional trees.
Native varieties include red maple, hickory, oak and dogwood. They provide natural shade, support watershed health, and beautify neighborhoods, the company noted.
The teams consist of employee groups who volunteer their time for environmental causes. Since launching the tree initiative in 2020, Green Teams have helped put 131,000 trees in the ground, the company said. It partners with parks, schools and local organizations to choose safe locations, and native species well-suited to local environments.
