About the Greenways, and the Schuylkill River Trail
The Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area covers portions of five Pennsylvania counties (Schuylkill, Berks, Chester, Montgomery, and Philadelphia). It is committed to “the stewardship of the Schuylkill River watershed and its heritage.”
The area was designated by Congress in 2000, as a place “where natural, cultural, historic and recreational resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally distinctive landscape.”
It oversees the Schuylkill River Trail, a multi-use path that winds its way in all or part through all five counties. Most of the trail is built over abandoned railroad lines. It has been completed in many stages since its founding, and ultimately will amount to about 120 miles open to the public. So far, its website reports, more than 75 miles of paved and crushed stone trail are usable. It is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Our “Entertainment” reporting covers the arts and culture, shows, exhibits, performances, festivals, and history-related activities within, or that affect residents of, Montgomery, Berks, and Chester PA counties.
