Amtrak Completing First Month of NextGen Acela Service
WASHINGTON DC – Amtrak is nearing completion of its first month of premium-level, high-speed NextGen Acela train service in the Northeast Corridor.
The corridor’s lengthy route stretches from Washington DC to Boston MA, and includes Acela stops in Trenton NJ, Philadelphia PA, and Wilmington DE. The trains can reach top speeds of 160 miles per hour.
Acela launched its NextGen service on Aug. 27 (2025; Wednesday). Amtrak says it currently schedules four trains to cover the route on weekdays, two on Saturdays, and three on Sundays. Because NextGen relies on only limited major city stops to reduce travel times, its trains bypass the rail station in Exton PA.
The new service offers what Amtrak describes as “an elevated experience” with a variety of features and amenities. It supplies free high-speed 5G-enabled internet wifi; individual power outlets and reading lights; and fresh, high-quality food and beverage services in the new Cafe Acela car. It also offers food cart service to business class passengers.
Amtrak says it plans to introduce service on 28 new NextGen trains through 2027, each representing an increase of 27% more seats per departure. NextGen trains are expected to “provide more reliable service and lower prices for the American people … while increasing the organization’s profitability,” federal Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy says.
