Business: Genesis Files Bankruptcy; Christmas at Outlets

July 19, 2025

In this edition of local business news Genesis HealthCare, with facilities in Sanatoga, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It says it intends to keep operating normally. Also, the Philadelphia Premium Outlets enjoy Christmas in July.

Local Operator Genesis HealthCare Files for Bankruptcy

POTTSTOWN PA – Genesis HealthCare Inc. – which operates the Sanatoga Court senior living, and Sanatoga Center skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities, both in Lower Pottsgrove Township – says it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company is headquartered in Kennett Square PA.

Its patients, their families, and employees may not be affected by the action.

Genesis earlier reported it has already negotiated with its creditors, which it claims will result in a “comprehensive solution” with a “clear and defined exit path.” The company adds it plans to “continue operating in a seamless manner.” Staff members would keep their positions, pay and benefits, it adds.

The company also operates facilities in Pennsburg, King of Prussia, Norristown, Reading, and Shillington PA.

Genesis owes its creditors more than $708 million in secured debt, and roughly $800 million in unsecured debt. Pennsylvania reportedly falls within the second group. According to a June 10 article written by Peter Hall and published by the Pennsylvania Capital Star news service, the filing indicates Genesis owes the state $58 million in taxes.

A final hearing on the filing is tentatively set for Aug. 5 (2025; Tuesday), to be followed by an Aug. 18 (Monday) creditors meeting. Genesis publicly announced the filing on July 9 (Wednesday).
