Dollar General Foundation's $54,000 Boosts Local Literacy

Dollar General Foundation’s $54,000 Boosts Local Literacy

June 10, 2025

GOODLETTSVILLE TN – The charitable arm of local Dollar General stores has presented grants totaling more than $54,000 to nine non-profit organizations, libraries, and schools across Montgomery, Chester, and Berks counties.

Dollar General Foundation's $54,000 Boosts Local Literacy

The funding is part of a record contribution by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. In a single day, it donated more than $13.2 million to support adult, family, and summer literacy programs in the 48 states, the foundation reports. Recipients can use the money to buy new technology, books, materials, or software to enhance literacy programs, it adds.

All local award winners are located within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center. Dollar General operates locally in Pottstown, Lower Pottsgrove, Stowe, Boyertown, Royersford, Douglassville, and Birdsboro.

Receiving grants were:

  • In Pottstown, the YWCA TriCounty Area, $7,500;
  • In King of Prussia, RSVP Volunteers, $3,000;
  • In Norristown, the Montgomery County Opportunities Industrialization Center, $10,000; and the Literacy Council of Norristown, $8,000;
  • In Chester Springs, the Chester Springs Library, $1,000;
  • In Kennett Square, the Adult Literacy Program at Kennett Library, $7,500; and the Garage Community and Youth Center, $5,000; and
  • In Reading, the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters, $10,000; and the Reading Science Center, $2,500.

The grant announcement “is a celebration of our unwavering commitment to student and teacher success,” foundation Executive Director Denine Torr says. “We are grateful to all the grant recipients for their commitment to advancing education and helping students thrive.” Since 1993, the foundation notes it has awarded more than $271 million in grant money.

Dollar General Stores Add Celebrity Brands

GOODLETTSVILLE TN – Dollar General “is elevating home style” by introducing celebrity and name-brand products in its stores’ revamped “Home Valley” section, it said Thursday (June 5, 2025) in a media release.

The section will feature collections from renowned celebrities, designers and brands, it adds. They include offerings by model Kathy Ireland, Betseyville®, Beverly Hills Polo Club®, and Simply Belle by Simply Southern®.

More than 20,000 of its stores are likely to carry the “affordably priced” goods, starting with a launch of Ireland’s “ki by kathy ireland®” ensemble of a dozen bedding and home items. Joining the celebrity collection are Betseyville® seasonal throws, and Beverly Hills Polo Club® sheets.

An additional Ireland collection is planned for fall, according to the company.

The product selection is designed to appeal to shoppers seeking quality items from recognizable national brands. “We are dedicated to delivering exceptional value to our customers while staying on top of the latest trends,” says Johanna Blankush, Dollar General senior vice president and general merchandising manager.
