PENNSBURG PA – Even the most unlikely delicacies – think snails in garlic butter – can become popular over time. In the case of more than 60 recipes being made available by the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, though, gaining popularity may take longer than anticipated.
The Schwenkfelder invites the public to join it for the Wednesday (June 11, 2025) Brown Bag Lecture from noon to 1 p.m. inside the center, 105 Seminary St., Pennsburg. That’s where Alice Wolfgang will introduce what are billed as “Odd and Even Offal PA German Foods,” a showcase of Pennsylvania Dutch unusual edibles.
“For the past 300 years, the Pennsylvania Dutch in Southeast Pennsylvania have maintained a unique cultural identity,” the center acknowledges. They have preserved the dialect “to some extent,” it notes “but even more importantly, their food!” Wolfgang will talk about potentially unexpected things to eat, and provide their recipes.
“While some might be considered odd, they are also thought to be delicious,” it adds.
Attendance at Brown Bag Lectures during 2025 is free, thanks to the sponsorship of KeyBank. The lecture is available in-person, or virtually. Call The Schwenkfelder at 215-679-3103, or send it an e-mail to info@schwenkfelder.org to reserve a seat.
As the program’s name implies, those who attend in person can bring their lunch with them to eat during the presentation. Those seeing it virtually can enjoy the same, wherever they are.
Don’t forget the napkins!
