HENDERSON NC – Former Big Lots Inc. department stores in Boyertown and Phoenixville, which closed earlier this year due to that retail chain’s bankruptcy proceedings, may remain that way for awhile.
The chain’s new corporate owner, North Carolina-based Variety Wholesalers, says it plans to re-open 132 Big Lots locations across the country during May, staff reporter Lauren Steen wrote Monday (April 28, 2025) in the Philadelphia Business Journal. Thirteen will be in Pennsylvania.
None currently are planned for the Greater Philadelphia area, New Jersey, or Delaware, Steen reports. The Journal states the Pennsylvania re-openings are to be located in Bloomsburg, Camp Hill, Cleona, DuBois, Dunmore, East Stroudsburg, Erie, Eynon, Franklin, Lehighton, Lewisburg, Meadville and New Castle.
Several stores have already re-opened nationally, the Big Lots website claims, in Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Big Lots sites also are planned for eight other states, to be phased in on May 1 and May 15, according to The Journal.
“Customer response to the newly expanded assortment of fresh inventory and great deals has been overwhelmingly positive,” Big Lots CEO Lisa Seigies said in a media release. “We’re excited to bring an additional 132 Big Lots! locations back to life in May,” she added.
Variety Wholesalers reportedly owns more than 400 retail stores that operate under the names Roses, Roses Express, Maxway, Bill’s Dollar Stores, Super 10, Super Dollar and Bargain Town.
Until recently, Variety Wholesalers operated a Roses store in The Shoppes at Coventry on West Schuylkill Road. In mid-January it announced plans to close that location as well.
