BIRDSBORO PA – Families can experience colonial life, using interactive learning and exploration, on May 4 (2025; Sunday) from noon to 4 p.m. at the Daniel Boone Homestead, 400 Daniel Boone Rd.
The homestead is presenting this year’s edition of Children’s Day with what it says is a “fun-filled afternoon of hands-on activities and demonstrations” for kids and adults.
It offers an opportunity to learn more about pioneer Daniel Boone, who was born in 1734, and his “exciting childhood in the Oley Valley.” Visitors also can participate in a variety of 18th Century hands-on activities that include textile processing, candle dipping, quill pen writing, and butter-making.
Admission costs $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for those between ages 6 and 17. Children age 5 and younger are free, as are members of the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates. Service animals, but not pets, are allowed; smoking is not permitted.
The event is sponsored by the associates, and the homestead is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
What’s on Its Schedule

Children will learn about Boone’s mother, Sarah Boone, and her famous butter and cheese as they explore the spring cellar and smokehouse. Volunteers will talk about food preservation, and children will have a chance to help make butter and tend the homestead garden. Tours of the Boone House and the Bertolet Log House will be offered throughout the day.
During the afternoon volunteers will teach children how to write with a quill pen, and dip candles. They’ll learn about handwriting, schooling, and lighting in the 18th Century. Finish up the event by stopping at the colonial toys and games activity. Explore animal furs and hides, too, while learning about young Daniel’s time as an Oley Valley hunter and trapper.
Families will become familiar with the period’s textile processing, and hear about work done by Daniel’s father as a weaver. Visitors can also watch a wool-dyeing demonstration, and try their hand at carding wool. The Hopewell Quilters will provide a demonstration and another hands-on activity for children.
Bring your appetite as well. The Munchiez Food Truck will be on-site for the afternoon. For more information about Children’s Day, call the homestead at 610-582-4900.
