In Foodie: Two Pottstown Restaurants Top Yelp’s Soul Food List

POTTSTOWN PA – Two restaurants in Pottstown, three in the Reading area, and one each in Norristown and West Chester captured Top 10 spots Friday (Feb. 21, 2025) on a Yelp review list of “Best Soul Food near Pottstown PA.”

“Everyone can have soul” the Yelp newsletter proclaims. Diners can “get fantastic smothered pork chops, fried catfish, mac n’ cheese, and a lot more at soul food restaurants all across Pottstown,” it adds. “These comfort-food spots serve right from the heart!”

The places selected by California-based Yelp for its list, however, were hardly “all across” the borough.

Of Yelp’s 10 list-leaders, only two have local addresses. Five others are up to a 30-minute drive from downtown. The remaining three are substantially farther away: in Folsom PA, southwest of Philadelphia; in Freemansburg PA, outside Allentown; and in Easton PA, a stone’s throw from New Jersey.

Yelp’s regional soul food list consists of 240 entries. A significant number of them are in Philadelphia and its immediate suburbs.

  7. Cherry’s Caribbean Palace, 415 Main St., Freemansburg PA;
  8. Big Daddy’z BBQ and Grill, 606 Macdade Blvd., Folsom PA;
  9. Mabel’s Barbeque, 607 E. Market St., West Chester PA; and
  10. Coach Lite Tavern, 418 S. 19th St., Reading PA.
