DENVER PA – Customers of the Gas Division of UGI Utilities Inc. in portions of western Montgomery, eastern and central Berks, and southwestern Chester counties, as well as other locations in Pennsylvania, face a proposed increase in their natural gas costs.
A legal notice published Monday (Jan. 27, 2025) by the Denver PA-based company says it filed a rate increase request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. If the commission approves, UGI proposes to raise rates for residential natural gas customers by about 10.8%, or roughly $11 monthly.
The new rates would take effect March 28 (Friday), the notice adds.
For its typical commercial heating customers, rates would rise by 8.6%, or about $26 monthly. Typical industrial customers would see increases of about 7.5%, or about $57 monthly. The overall rate increase would generate about $110.4 million in revenue, UGI estimates.
The notice suggests that customers who want to know specifics about how the proposed hike could affect them should call the Gas Division toll-free at 1-800-276-2722.
PUC Accepting Public Comment on Proposal
The company notes it must prove to the commission that its request is reasonable. The commission can approve all or part of the increase; decline it; or raise or lower existing rates to levels not mentioned in the legal notice, should it be considered appropriate.
Those interested in challenging the increase can file a complaint by sending a letter, explaining their objections, to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, P.O. Box 3265, Harrisburg PA 17105-3265. Formal complaint forms can also be downloaded online.
Customers also can offer personal testimony regarding the increase by attending public hearings before the commission. Call it toll-free at 1-800-692-7380 for more information, and to be notified about upcoming public hearings.
UGI Utilities Inc. is a natural gas and electric utility delivering energy to an estimated 700,000 customers in 45 counties in Pennsylvania, and one county in Maryland.
