BOYERTOWN PA – Big Lots Inc. says it has sold up to 400 of its more than 900 remaining stores nationwide to another retailer that plans to operate them under the same brand name. Despite the news, a closing sale that began in mid-December continues at the company’s Boyertown location, 801 E. Philadelphia Ave. Ste. 4.
In an early January media release, the company reports it “successfully” completed a deal to sell between 200 and 400 stores, and two distribution centers, to be operated by Variety Wholesalers Inc. The financial value of what Big Lots described as its “strategic transaction” was not disclosed.
Meanwhile, at the Boyertown store, several stacks of shelves have already been emptied of merchandise. Pallets filled with cartons could be seen Jan. 10 (2025; Friday) in an adjacent storage area.
A lengthy “Closing” sign spanned six of the store’s front windows. It was accompanied by other signs that proclaimed “Nothing Held Back,” and “Entire Store Up to 30% Off Original Price. Limited Exceptions Apply.” On its website as of Wednesday (Jan. 15), Big Lots continued to promote “All Stores Closing” in bright red and orange lettering.
Deal Provides Future ‘Framework’
In addition to Boyertown, Big Lots also operates stores locally in Phoenixville, Norristown, Reading, and Lansdale. It is unknown which of the five, if any, will find a reprieve among the locations destined for Variety Wholesalers’ operation.
Company President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Thorn claims the agreement with Variety Wholesalers “provides a framework to preserve thousands of jobs, maximize value, and maintain the Big Lots brand … We are grateful for the continued hard work and dedication of Big Lots associates across the company,” he adds.
Big Lots also operates a charitable entity, The Big Lots Foundation. The company reports the foundation “together with (its) customers, associates, and vendors, has delivered more than $176 million of philanthropic support to critical needs in hunger, housing, healthcare, and education.” The future status of the foundation has not yet been publicly addressed.
