In Business: Pottstown Kohl’s on List to Close by April

Kohl’s Pottstown Store on List of 27 to Close by April

January 10, 2025

POTTSTOWN PA – The Kohl’s department store at The Shoppes at Coventry, 351 N. Schuylkill Rd., is scheduled to be closed by this April, its corporate parent says.

Kohl’s, a long-time anchor of what once was Coventry Mall, is among 27 stores nationwide on a Thursday (Jan. 9, 2025) list of what the retailer reports are “under-performing locations” destined to be shuttered. There currently are more than 1,150 Kohl’s stores across the country.

Although it bears a Pottstown 19464 zip code, the store is located within North Coventry Township, Chester County.

A Kohl’s media release noted it “continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base.” The Pottstown site was the only prospective closing named in Pennsylvania, as part of what the firm labeled as “real estate changes.” Kohl’s stores in Royersford and Lansdale are not mentioned in, and apparently remain unaffected by, the announcement.

The space currently occupied by the Pottstown Kohl’s has a history of retailing changes, according to the Malls and Retail Wiki at Fandom.com. It reportedly began life in what initially was “The Norco Mall” as a Britt’s Department Store. Over more than 50 years it became Hess’s, changed again to become a J.C. Penney, then The Bon-Ton, and finally Kohl’s.

It is unknown if The Shoppes at Coventry owners have a prospective tenant lined up as a successor.

Long-Term Growth Strategy

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” Tom Kingsbury, Kohl’s chief executive officer,” said of the closings in a statement. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

All associates at Pottstown and the other closing locations “have been informed, and offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s,” it said. The retailer offered its “thanks our associates for their work,” and added it is “working to support” them as the store ends its operations.

Two other Kohl’s are due to be closed in states neighboring Pennsylvania. They are in East Windsor NJ, and Blue Ash OH.
