POTTSTOWN PA – Greater Pottstown area members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and other religious and charitable organizations, are volunteering though Wednesday (Dec. 4, 2024) to help those in need during the Christmas season.
The groups are involved in the “Light the World Giving Machine” project at Philadelphia’s Fashion District. It’s described as an “experiential opportunity” in donating goods eagerly sought by local families, and others beyond Pennsylvania, to make their holidays brighter.
Congregants of the church, 93 Maugers Mill Rd., have for some time been planning for and working on the project. It officially opened Nov. 18 (Monday) in Center City.
The Giving Machines resemble vending machines from which many people buy snacks or soda. These devices, however, allow donors to purchase interesting and different items for families here and across the world. If they choose, donors can agree to buy a goat, a coat, a variety of other warming clothing, groceries or meals, a pair of shoes, or even a simple soccer ball.
Giving Machines Now on Five Continents
The needs are endless, but any donations small or large can fulfill the desires of one or more families, according to a media release from the churches serving Pottstown, Reading, and the Lehigh Valley. Goods that donors purchase are delivered directly to the families by other non-profits. All operation costs are covered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The church is cooperating in the project with non-profit food distributor Philabundance, which serves food banks in Pottstown, Royersford, and Collegeville, among others; Interfaith Philadelphia Zones of Peace, Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ, The Ministry of Caring Inc., Days for Girls, and Mentors International.
The annual Giving Machine project itself has been in operation since 2017, and now can be found in about 100 cities on five continents. Since their launch, the Giving Machines have accounted for more than $32 million in donations.
