Muhlenberg House Candlelight Tours
Travel back in time Dec. 7 (Saturday) from 3-9 p.m., or Dec. 8 (Sunday) from noon to 4 p.m., to the late 1700s at the home of Lutheran minister Henry Muhlenberg, 201 W. Main St. That’s where visitors will savor the sights, sounds, and aromas of a Pennsylvania German Christmas.
During a candlelight tour, interpreters in authentic period clothing will share stories from the Muhlenberg family in each room. Chat with Pastor Muhlenberg in his office, then step into the dining room where a festive meal awaits.
Also open for visits are the nearby the Speaker’s House, and Dewees Tavern.
The Speaker’s House was the home of the Frederick Muhlenberg family from 1781 to 1803. Muhlenberg is best known as first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Guests there can warm themselves by the fire, and see what the hearth cook is preparing in the building’s newly-restored kitchen wing. They’ll also get a sneak peek at on-going restoration work in the main house.
At Dewees Tavern, its five galleries of changing exhibits and continuing displays are decorated for Christmas. Being shown are German Erzgebirge woodcarvings, a Moravian Christmas pyramid, Noah’s arks, and other displays.
Timed tickets are available online now, for the candlelight tour of the Muhlenberg House and entrance to the Dewees Tavern and Speaker’s House. Historic Trappe “strongly recommend(s)” buying tickets in advance. Tours will sell out, it says, and walk-in purchases are not guaranteed.
Parking for the event is at St. Luke’s Church, 200 W. Main St.
