BIRDSBORO PA – Eighteenth Century frontiersman Daniel Boone will be talked about and celebrated Nov. 3 (2024; Sunday) from noon to 4 p.m., as the Daniel Boone Homestead observes his 290th birthday.
Leading the discussion will be someone who knows Boone well: writer, professor, and biographer Robert Morgan. The ticketed event is open to the public.
The party features colonial toys and games, crafts, and a birthday cake. Visitors also can stroll through the homestead historic area to see several buildings: the blacksmith shop, homestead barn, and smokehouse. Tours of the Boone House, where young Daniel was born and spent a portion of his life, also will be offered throughout the afternoon.
Explaining facets of that life will be Morgan, who for 51 years taught writing and literature at Cornell University. His book, “Boone: A Biography,” was published in 2007 and became a national bestseller. It won the Kentucky Book Award, and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Biography.
Morgan retired in 2022 as Kappa Alpha Professor of English Emeritus.
Book Signing Follows Presentation
Morgan’s presentation is scheduled for 2 p.m. A limited quantity of his books will be available for purchase in the homestead’s museum shop, and following the discussion Morgan will conduct a book signing in its visitor center.
Admission to the event costs $10 for adults, $8 for seniors age 65 and older, and $5 for youths age 6-17. Children age 5 and younger will be admitted without charge. Members of the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates, a non-profit organization, also are admitted free. No pets are allowed except service animals, and smoking is forbidden on the grounds.
The homestead is located between Reading and Pottstown, at 400 Daniel Boone Rd., Birdsboro, a mile north of U.S. Route 422. The property is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The event is sponsored and presented by the associates’ group.
